A beautiful Islamic guide for welcoming a newborn with Sunnah practices
Adhan • Tahneek • Aqeeqah • DuaThe moment a baby is born, the world changes for the parents. Tiny hands, soft breaths, and a new soul — a gift from Allah.
In Islam, this moment is not just emotional, but deeply spiritual. From the very first second, beautiful Sunnah practices guide us on how to welcome this new life with blessings.
Let’s understand what should be done after a baby is born in Islam.
1. Give Adhan in the Baby’s Ear
One of the first and most beautiful acts is to recite the Adhan in the baby’s right ear.
This Sunnah ensures that the first words the child hears are about the greatness of Allah.
2. Perform Tahneek
Tahneek is the practice of gently rubbing a softened date (khajoor) on the baby’s palate.
This Sunnah brings barakah (blessing) and was practiced by the Prophet ﷺ.
3. Make Dua for the Baby
Making dua is one of the most powerful acts. Parents should pray for the child’s health, iman, and future.
Meaning: O Allah, bless this child.
4. Give a Good Name
Choosing a meaningful and beautiful name is very important in Islam.
The name should have a positive meaning and reflect Islamic values.
5. Perform Aqeeqah
Aqeeqah is the sacrifice done on the 7th day after birth.
- For a boy: 2 goats
- For a girl: 1 goat
The meat is distributed among family, friends, and the needy.
6. Shave the Baby’s Hair
On the 7th day, the baby’s head is shaved.
The weight of the hair in silver is given in charity — a beautiful act of purification and generosity.
A Blessed Beginning
Welcoming a baby in Islam is filled with love, dua, and Sunnah. These small acts bring barakah and set a beautiful foundation for the child’s life.
May Allah bless every child with iman, health, and righteousness. Ameen.
